The Got-no-business-singin’-the-blues Blues

© 1998, Steven Gretz

Woke up this morning--and tried to write a blues song
No matter what I wrote down, it came out sounding wrong
I’d like to make this song wail, but I don’t have the touch
Truth to tell--I never suffered that much
I’m just a fortunate white boy who gets to win more than lose
I’ve got those “Got no business singin’ the blues” Blues...

I don’t like to gamble--and I’ve never been in jail
I never got arrested--never had to post bail
I never shot a man just to watch him die
I never hopped a freight train--don’t even want to try
Never took too many chances--playin’ safe is what I choose,
Now I’ve got those “Got no business singin’ the blues” Blues...

I’ve never been to Memphis--or to New Orleans
Nashville is another town I’ve never seen
I’ve been to Kansas City a time or two
But I always find something pretty nice there to do
I live in the suburbs in a house that’s brand new
I’ve got those “Got no business singin’ the blues” Blues...

I never drove a Chevy or a Cadillac
I don’t think I’ve ever even seen a shotgun shack
I don’t drink much--I’ve stayed away from grass
My friends and my neighbors are all upper middle class
I never had a pair of blue suede shoes
I’ve got those “Got no business singin’ the blues” Blues...

I don’t know anybody named “Sly” or “Tiny” or “Slim”
I used to know a “Maurice ” but I’ve lost track of him
I DO know a guy whose friends call him “Blue”
But he’s a management consultant--a Stanford grad too
With friends like that, what’s a songwritin’ man to do?
I’ve got those “Got no business singin’ the blues” Blues...
